How many solar panels do I need?
For a family of four, an Eco 250 (250 litre cylinder) system is used to produce all the hot water with just one panel.
For a family of 5, an Eco 300 also uses only one panel.
For six or more people in the household, please contact us to design a system for your needs (larger systems use two panels).
What size is the solar panel?
Each panel measures 200cm x 80cm.
How much does a solar panel weigh?
The panels are lightweight, weighing only 8kg each.
Do the solar panels have to go on the roof?
No, they can hang vertically on your wall or balcony or even go on the ground.
Do the solar panels have to face north?
No, they will also work facing east or west.
Do the solar panels rust?
No, the panels are made from aluminium so corrosion is not an issue.
Can the solar panels be painted?
Yes, but ideally in dark colours.
What refrigerant is used in the solar panel?
Two types of gas are used: the hot water system uses R134A and the central heating and swimming pool heating systems use 407C. Both are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
How hot does the water get?
The solar system brings the water temperature to 55°C before it switches off.
What about the risk of Legionnaire's disease?
The Energie Eco range has a "Disinfect" function, a water heating cycle that increases the water temperature for a period long enough to prevent the formation of legionella bacteria inside the tank. The Disinfect function can be set automatically or manually. This meets the NZ Building Code G12 regulation regarding protection of hot water storage from legionella (heat water daily to greater than 60°C, or weekly to greater than 60°C for 1 hour).
Can the Energie system be used to centrally heat my home?
Yes! This is one of the main applications.
Can the Energie system heat my swimming pool?
Yes! This is a popular application and is great to extend the usage time of your pool.
How much does an Energie solar water heating system cost?
This depends on the type and size of the system you require and the type of building. We provide a free, no obligation survey and quote and will design a system to suit your needs.
How far can the solar panel be positioned from the cylinder?
A maximum of 15m vertically and/or 30m horizontally.
How long does it take to install a solar hot water system?
A domestic hot water system can normally be installed in a day. For new builds we usually do two site visits: one to install the panel on the roof (while the scaffolding is still up) then a second once the house is completed to install the cylinder, connect it up to the panel and commission the system.
What is the energy consumption of running the compressor?
It depends on the system, but all systems consume very little electrical power in comparison with the heat generated. The Eco 250 uses 390w of electrical power but delivers 1690w of heat (a COP of 4.33 to 1). Larger systems give even better results.
What warranties does the Energie system come with?
10 years on the panel, 5 years on the cylinder and 2 years on the heat exchanger.
Will I have hot water when there is no sun?
Yes! The system works on differential temperature – the difference between the very cold refrigerant liquid in the panel and the warm air surrounding the panel. So it even works at night! Click here to read the full explanation.
How much does it cost to run?
That depends on how much hot water you use! The Energie domestic hot water system can supply all your hot water. If you heat your water with electricity it will save you about 80% of your cost. So for every $1 you spend on hot water now, using our system will only cost 20 cents.
What is the payback period?
That depends on the size of the system, the complexity of your installation and your hot water usage. However, a 250lt system (suitable for a family of 4) installed in a new build property should save enough money to pay for the system in about 5 years.
How long does the Energie system last?
The expected life of the system is a minimum of 25 years.
Does the solar system require maintenance?
No, virtually nothing. As with all hot water cylinders, you should check your sacrificial anode inside the tank periodically.
